The Negro Bible: a non-existing manual? volume 0
This installation reads as a performance by tumpi flow. A process in dialogue executed as PSYCHOMAMIO (2016-2021). This form of documenting is related to Afrofuturism. Afrofuturism promotes the artistic practice of simultaneously navigating through the past, the present and the future (Gaskins, 2016). In Suriname, mamio is a quilt made of fabric remnants. The artwork represents a 3D mamioand is the result of a ritual of reflecting on social issues, taking into account both knowing and not knowing (knowledge and intuition). It symbolizes conversations with an imagination: the imaginary dialogue between Boni and Kwasi. The elements in the work, collected between two solo exhibitions of Miguel Keerveld (2012 and 2020), all have a history. With their own histories they form a network that is inspired by the book Kritiek van de Zwarte Rede: ‘The Negro bible’. For the artist this metaphorical handbook functions as a non-existing manual in which he searches for new ways to give space to, and to recode, traditional systems of knowledge and technology. This 3D mamio demonstrates a time and space between myth and fact: artefacts as representations of the physical world (Gaskins, 2016).
